Haaland set for Aston Villa start after fitness update

Erling Haaland is expected to return to Manchester City's starting lineup for their weekend trip to Aston Villa, with manager Enzo Maresca confirming the striker is fully fit.

The Norwegian forward was an unused substitute in Wednesday's Champions League match against AEK Athens, having played every City fixture this season and made four appearances for Norway during the international break.

Fitness concerns eased

Haaland started last weekend's 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, scoring twice, but appeared to sustain a knock to the foot as he hobbled off at full time. Maresca had previously suggested the striker was due a rest.

However, speaking before the Aston Villa match, Maresca moved to ease any worries about Haaland's fitness.

Team news for Villa trip

Nico O'Reilly, Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes were also absent for the AEK Athens match, and their availability for the weekend remains uncertain.

"They could all be available or not. There are still doubts," Maresca said. "Erling is the only one who is 100 per cent available and for the other three we need to wait."

Haaland's form

Haaland has scored 12 goals in nine appearances across the Premier League and Champions League this season. His eight league goals put him top of the Golden Boot race, ahead of Alexander Isak and Joao Pedro, who are joint second with five goals each.
