Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has handed the club a major injury scare after picking up a knock while on international duty with Norway. The 23-year-old appeared to suffer a recurrence of the ankle problem that forced him to sit out the second half of City's 6-1 win over Bournemouth earlier this month.
Haaland started on the bench for Norway's friendly with the Faroe Islands on Thursday and was introduced for the second half. During the match, he stretched for a ball following a cross and seemed to get his foot stuck in the turf as he landed, requiring treatment on his ankle before continuing.
Norway boss Stale Solbakken said: 'I think it's going well. But I haven't spoken to him. At least he got back in. It can't be that bad then!' However, team doctor Ola Sand gave a more concerning update, stating: 'It was much of the same that happened against Bournemouth... He gets a slight twist in his ankle, where he is a bit vulnerable. It hurts a lot right away, and then it goes away pretty quickly.'
Sand confirmed that Haaland would receive treatment and be assessed the next morning, adding that the player had already spoken to City's medical staff. It remains to be seen whether Haaland will feature in Norway's match against Scotland on Sunday.
The injury comes ahead of City's Premier League clash with title rivals Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in nine days' time. Haaland has scored 13 goals in 12 games this season and missed last season's corresponding fixture with a groin problem.
