Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as Norway beat Israel in a World Cup qualifier overshadowed by pro-Palestine protests in Oslo. The match went ahead under high security, with around 1,500 demonstrators marching to the Ullevaal Stadion. Norway's victory moves them closer to a first World Cup appearance in 27 years, with a win over Estonia next month confirming qualification.
Haaland missed an early penalty, saved by Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, and then saw a retake also saved. However, he recovered to score three goals as Norway dominated. Israel manager Ran Ben Shimon described Norway and Spain as the two best teams in Europe. Israel are now eliminated from qualifying contention.
The game was controversial due to Israel's involvement, with the Norwegian Football Federation previously calling for sanctions over Israeli teams in occupied Palestinian territory. Protests were largely peaceful, though a pitch invader was detained during the first half. Police escorted Israeli journalists away from the protest after an exchange with a member of the public.
Inside the stadium, a Palestine flag was displayed alongside a banner reading 'Let children live'. Around 100 Israeli fans attended, with some home supporters whistling during their anthem. Norway's victory was convincing, but the political backdrop ensured the occasion remained tense.
