Arsenal have announced the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £64m. The 27-year-old joins for an initial £55m, with performance-related add-ons potentially increasing the fee, and has signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Gyökeres becomes Mikel Arteta's sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Nørgaard, and Noni Madueke. The club confirmed the move with a post on X, stating: “This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyökeres is a Gunner.”
The Sweden international scored 39 goals last season to fire Sporting to the Portuguese title, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City. He is expected to join his new teammates on Arsenal's pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong, with matches against Newcastle and Tottenham scheduled.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised Gyökeres' qualities, describing him as “a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers.” He added: “He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.”
Gyökeres began his career in Sweden before moving to Brighton in 2018. After loan spells at St Pauli, Swansea, and Coventry, he joined the Sky Blues permanently in 2021. Following Coventry's Championship play-off final defeat, he moved to Sporting for £20.5m, where he scored 97 goals in 102 matches.
Arsenal have been without a recognised striker since injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. Sporting director Andrea Berta has strengthened a squad that has finished Premier League runners-up for three consecutive seasons, while Gabriel Magalhães and Myles Lewis-Skelly have signed new contracts.
