Arsenal Face Champions League Test After Damaging Bournemouth Defeat
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal must swiftly move on from their disappointing Premier League loss to Bournemouth as they prepare for a crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP on Wednesday night. The Gunners secured a narrow 1-0 advantage in Lisbon but followed it with a frustrating home defeat, raising questions about squad depth and performance.
Gyokeres Receives Harsh Criticism Despite Goal
Striker Viktor Gyokeres, who scored from the penalty spot in the Bournemouth match, faced severe scrutiny after suggesting the dry pitch at Emirates Stadium hindered Arsenal's play. Former Premier League forward Jan Aage Fjortoft dismissed this excuse, delivering a damning verdict on the Swedish international.
"I guess the best strikers in the world will score on dry pitches, wet pitches, snow, rain, wind, everything," Fjortoft stated on ESPN FC. "I don’t want to re-open that debate over Arsenal lacking a top, top striker because Gyokeres just sent Sweden to the World Cup, but he did miss some chances today."
Fjortoft highlighted the importance of elite forwards in title races, referencing Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. "Have there been any champions without that player who can save them on a bad day? Gyokeres scored today and his form is okay, but it seems it’s not good enough to shoot you to a championship."
Arteta Demands Aggressive Response
Manager Mikel Arteta emphasised the need for resilience and aggression following the setback. "We have to look at ourselves, which is the most important thing, and after getting punched, it's about how you react," Arteta said. "There's no more moment to protect anything; it's a moment to go and attack and to be very aggressive."
Arteta now faces significant selection decisions for the Sporting CP clash, with pressure mounting to secure progression in Europe while maintaining domestic ambitions.
Dowman Impresses, Earns Starting Calls
In contrast to Gyokeres' criticism, 16-year-old Max Dowman received widespread praise for his lively cameo off the bench against Bournemouth. Former England international Jay Bothroyd, an Arsenal academy graduate, urged Arteta to start the teenager in place of Gabriel Martinelli.
"As far as I'm concerned, Max Dowman needs to start," Bothroyd told Sky Sports. "I don't care no more. Arsenal need to go over the line. That kid, when he plays, he's fearless. He wants the ball. He goes at players. He might lose it, but he goes at them."
Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown also noted Dowman's impact, though he pointed to broader midfield issues. "Even when Dowman came on, we were all screaming give him the ball, but they didn’t have enough good control of the ball in the midfield, and that is all down to Bournemouth and Arsenal not mixing up their game enough," Keown told TNT Sports.
As Arsenal regroup for the Champions League, the spotlight remains on Gyokeres' form and Dowman's potential promotion, with Arteta tasked with balancing experience and youth in a high-stakes fixture.
