Guardiola Admits Title Race Over if Man City Lose to Arsenal This Weekend
Guardiola: Title Race Over if Man City Lose to Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has openly acknowledged that Manchester City's Premier League title aspirations will be definitively concluded if they suffer a defeat to Arsenal in this Sunday's pivotal showdown between the league's top two teams.

Arsenal's Lead and the Stakes at the Etihad

The Gunners currently hold a six-point advantage over City ahead of the highly anticipated match, although Guardiola's side retains a game in hand, adding a layer of complexity to the title race. Arsenal's lead was recently reduced from nine points after an unexpected home loss to Bournemouth, which was swiftly followed by City's commanding victory at Chelsea last weekend.

Guardiola's Cautious Assessment of the Gunners

Despite Manchester City's triumph over Arsenal in last month's Carabao Cup final, Guardiola emphasised that the North London club cannot be underestimated. He highlighted Arsenal's impressive run to the Champions League quarter-finals without a single defeat, underscoring their resilience and quality on the European stage.

The Spaniard elaborated, stating, "Obviously, if we lose it's over. But there are still games to play. The reality is there are seven games left for us in the Premier League, and that is the decisive moment."

He further noted, "Maybe they are not at their best, but they are the only English team in the Champions League and they have been the best so far. We want to challenge them."

Focus and Preparation for the Crucial Encounter

Guardiola revealed that he has instructed his players to treat the upcoming match as a standard football game, warning against emotional distractions that could lead to a loss of focus. "I said today to the players, it is just a football game and we have to approach it like a football game. If you get distracted by emotions, that is how you lose focus," he explained.

He added, "The target is to perform well, and that is exactly what you have got to do and all the aspects required to challenge a team like Arsenal. The confidence is good, we are ready."

Potential Twists in the Title Race

While a victory for Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium would effectively end City's title challenge, Guardiola pointed out that the Premier League season could still see numerous twists and turns. With approximately half a dozen games remaining for both teams after this weekend, the title race remains fluid, though Sunday's result is poised to be a critical determinant.
