Guardiola Vows Manchester City Will Be Stronger Next Season Despite Current Title Fight
Guardiola: Man City Will Be Stronger Next Season

Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning to the Premier League, declaring that Manchester City will emerge as a more formidable and complete challenger for honours in the upcoming season. This bold assertion comes despite the club still being in contention to overtake Arsenal in the current title race.

Uncertainty Over Guardiola's Future

Speculation has been rife outside the Etihad Stadium that Guardiola may be preparing to conclude his illustrious managerial career in England this summer. However, sources close to the Catalan tactician maintain that he has not yet reached a definitive decision regarding his future. Guardiola himself addressed these rumours indirectly by focusing on the team's long-term prospects.

A Work in Progress

Reflecting on City's recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, Guardiola admitted that the squad is not yet a fully cohesive unit. "We are not a complete team to compete to be a solid [team] - that is the reality," he stated. He emphasised that the team is undergoing significant transformations following a squad overhaul, but expressed unwavering confidence in their trajectory.

"I'm pretty sure next season will be better. Next season will be better. I don't have doubts about that," Guardiola affirmed, highlighting his belief in the ongoing development process.

Current Campaign Challenges

Currently trailing Arsenal by seven points, Manchester City remain active in all four competitions. Their immediate focus shifts to an FA Cup fifth-round clash against Newcastle United. Guardiola voiced frustration over the scheduling, noting the limited rest between the Newcastle fixture and a crucial Champions League last-16 encounter with Real Madrid.

He criticised the prioritisation of domestic cup competitions over European glory, remarking, "here in England it is more important what happens in the Carabao Cup than in Europe." This congestion forces Guardiola to carefully manage his squad rotation ahead of the Madrid match.

Defending Phil Foden

Amid selection dilemmas, Guardiola offered strong support for Phil Foden, who has experienced a dip in form. Foden has not scored since mid-December and currently finds himself outside Guardiola's preferred starting lineup, coinciding with Thomas Tuchel's announcement of the final England squad before the World Cup.

"Step by step, he will be back," Guardiola assured. "His dynamics are still there. The moment he will relax and do what he does." He praised Foden's performance against Nottingham Forest, noting, "He played good. I had the feeling he played really good. Against Forest, he gave two good assists for Erling (Haaland) for two chances. That is what we want from Phil."

Guardiola urged the young midfielder to play with freedom and confidence, saying, "Have the courage to be incredibly free in his mind and his soul to express his incredible talent in the final third. Get the ball, turn and go, turn and go."
