Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning that even a victory in Sunday's crucial title showdown against Arsenal will not establish Manchester City as clear favourites for the Premier League crown. The City manager expressed concerns about what he described as a 'terrible' run-in during the final stretch of the season.
Guardiola's Cautious Stance on Title Race
The Manchester City boss admitted openly that a defeat against Arsenal this weekend would effectively end their hopes of regaining the championship. However, he emphasised that a win would not guarantee anything either, pointing specifically to a challenging sequence of fixtures that await his team in the coming weeks.
Despite Arsenal's recent struggles – having won only one of their last five matches across all competitions – Guardiola noted that Mikel Arteta's side actually boasts a more favourable set of games before the season concludes in May. This reality has made the City manager particularly mindful of placing excessive importance on their upcoming encounter.
The 'Terrible' Run-In That Concerns Guardiola
'If we lose, it is over,' Guardiola stated bluntly. 'But we still have games to play, six games is a lot. Our calendar is terrible – Everton away, Bournemouth away, Aston Villa the last game at home. And Crystal Palace, Brentford. Still there are many things to do.'
Guardiola reflected on the unpredictable nature of the title race, noting: 'We don't know what is going to happen and six, seven or eight games ago maybe we didn't have that positive feeling. We were there in the title race but after the games against Nottingham Forest and West Ham last month I said no, we ran away.'
City's Growing Strength and Arsenal's Unique Motivation
While expressing caution about the run-in, Guardiola acknowledged that his Manchester City side has grown stronger as the campaign has progressed. He believes recent performances give them confidence heading into the decisive final phase of the season.
The City manager, who insisted he enjoys watching Arsenal play, offered an intriguing analysis of what makes their opponents dangerous: 'What we cannot fight against is their 22 years without winning the Premier League, so they have something that is unique.'
The Psychological Battle and Guardiola's Message to Players
Guardiola highlighted the psychological dimension of the title race, particularly the value of confidence: 'One aspect is the confidence. That is an incredible aspect and if you could buy it in the supermarket we would go there and buy it immediately. It's one of the most important aspects and the reality is seven games left for us in the league and this is the decisive moment.'
Regarding his approach to the crucial Arsenal match, Guardiola revealed his planned message to players: 'I will say to the players, "it's just a football game". So we have to approach it like a normal game. It's really important, of course, but if we are distracted too much by emotions, this kind of things, after you will lose the focus. What is the target? It's to perform well. That is exactly what we have to do.'
The Manchester City manager concluded with a realistic assessment of what Sunday's match requires: 'If we play like the second half during 95 minutes, and they play like their second half during 95 minutes, we are going to win. Well, maybe not, because football is unpredictable. But we will be closer. That is what we want. We have to do a perfect performance.'
