Italian Golfer Andrea Pavan Discharged After Lift Shaft Horror Fall
Golfer Andrea Pavan Leaves Hospital After Lift Shaft Accident

Italian professional golfer Andrea Pavan has been discharged from hospital after suffering a terrifying 'freak' accident, falling down a lift shaft at private accommodation ahead of the South African Open last week. The DP Tour star is believed to have plummeted two or three floors down the shaft when lift doors opened and he stepped in before the car had arrived.

Miraculous Recovery Underway

The 36-year-old sustained multiple serious injuries in the horror incident and subsequently underwent surgery on his shoulder and back. However, in a public statement shared on social media, Pavan revealed that his recovery is progressing at a remarkable pace, which he described as feeling like a miracle.

'Today was a big day,' Pavan announced. 'I got discharged from the hospital to continue my rehabilitation at accommodation nearby kindly arranged by the Rupert family. It truly feels miraculous to be able to walk and begin performing some basic activities, albeit at a very slow and careful pace.'

Gratitude for Medical and Tour Support

Pavan expressed profound gratitude toward the medical staff who facilitated his recovery. 'I would like to thank all the Mediclinic staff, all the surgeons, nurses and everyone who has made this incredible recovery possible,' he stated.

He also acknowledged support from the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour, specifically mentioning individuals named Mateo, Ben, and Joel, along with all who assisted him during the past week. 'The DP World Tour players and caddies who visited me in ICU while competing in the SA Open - it truly felt like being part of a big family!' Pavan added.

Overwhelming Support from Community

The golfer extended his thanks to friends, family, sponsors and others who reached out during his hospital stay, sharing that his heart is 'overwhelmed with love and joy.' Pavan attributed his progress to divine intervention, saying, 'God has answered many prayers; it truly feels like His hand is guiding my recovery. The road ahead is very long, but this small step feels incredibly positive!'

Pavan confirmed that he will need to remain in South Africa for an additional five weeks to rehabilitate his shoulder and back, as well as heal other bruises and secondary injuries. Once he returns home, he will continue his rehabilitation journey.

Fundraiser for Medical Expenses

Pavan's former Texas A&M team-mate, Matt Van Zandt, has established a GoFundMe page to help cover the expenses facing Pavan and his family. Van Zandt indicated that he expects the golfer 'to remain in South Africa for many weeks before he can be safely evaluated for travel back to the U.S.'

The fundraiser has already raised over $81,000 since its launch just six days ago, demonstrating significant support from the golfing community and beyond.
