The New York Giants are making a change at quarterback, benching veteran Russell Wilson in favour of rookie Jaxson Dart for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to two people familiar with the decision.
Wilson struggled in Sunday night's 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, throwing two interceptions as the Giants fell to 0-3. Fans at MetLife Stadium chanted “We want Dart!” after one of the picks.
Coach Brian Daboll was noncommittal on Monday, saying the staff was “evaluating everything,” but the team has now decided to give Dart his first NFL start. Wilson is expected to dress as the backup, with Jameis Winston remaining third on the depth chart.
Dart, selected 25th overall after the Giants traded back into the first round, has yet to attempt a pass in his limited snaps over the past two weeks. Wilson has completed 65 of 110 passes for 778 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
Daboll expressed confidence in Dart, saying, “We put him in the game for the last two weeks. We wouldn’t put anybody in a game we don’t feel confident with.” Dart will become the sixth different starting quarterback for the Giants since 2022.
