Germany began their World Cup 2026 campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Ecuador at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday evening. The home side dominated from the first whistle, with Kai Havertz opening the scoring in the 12th minute after a slick passing move.
First-half dominance
Jamal Musiala doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a curling shot from outside the box. Ecuador struggled to create chances, with Germany's high press forcing errors. By halftime, the hosts had 65% possession and eight shots on target.
Niclas Füllkrug added a third just before the break, heading in from a Joshua Kimmich cross. The striker then completed his brace in the 54th minute, slotting home after a defensive mix-up.
Ecuador's struggles
Ecuador rarely threatened Manuel Neuer's goal, with their best chance coming from a long-range effort by Moisés Caicedo that sailed over the bar. Coach Gustavo Alfaro admitted his side were outclassed: "Germany were superior in every aspect. We need to learn from this and move forward."
The win places Germany top of Group D, with their next match against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Ecuador face a must-win game against Mexico to keep their knockout hopes alive.
