Gakpo and Isak miss Liverpool training ahead of Man City clash
Gakpo, Isak miss Liverpool training before Man City match

Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak are major doubts for Liverpool's visit from Manchester City after both missed training on Thursday. However, Jeremy Jacquet was able to take part in the session, giving Andoni Iraola a defensive boost ahead of the weekend match.

Injury concerns for key forwards

Both Gakpo and Isak were forced to cut their international breaks short after suffering ankle and thigh issues respectively. Iraola confirmed earlier this week that both forwards were facing a race against time to be fit.

Gakpo was hurt in a challenge by Ipswich Town's Sasa Lukic during Netherlands' 2-1 win in Serbia. Isak, who scored and suffered a toe issue in Sweden's victory over Romania, was withdrawn and sent back to Merseyside with what manager Graham Potter described as a small issue.

Defensive boost for Iraola

Jacquet suffered a minor hamstring issue on duty for France and played no part in Monday's 4-1 win over Belgium. The £60m defender took part in the gym session earlier in the afternoon before heading out with the rest of his colleagues on to the pitches as normal.

Iraola's unbeaten Reds return to action after three weeks when they welcome Premier League leaders Manchester City to Anfield. The match is the first since City were found guilty by an independent commission of the majority of the 115 financial charges against them.

Race against time

"I think Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo both have had to leave the national teams with injuries," Iraola told beIN SPORTS. "Now it's a matter of if they are going to recover in time to help us in the next game or not. But right now they are both injured."

The pair have scored six goals and five assists between them under Iraola. Their absence would represent a major blow for the new Reds boss as he aims to inflict a first defeat of the campaign on City, who have appealed their guilty verdict. Iraola is due to speak to the media from 1.30pm on Friday afternoon to offer a more accurate update on the influential forwards.
