Croke Park's chief executive Peter McKenna has expressed a strong desire to host the potential super-fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in Dublin. Rumours have circulated that the all-British heavyweight clash could take place in the Irish capital this autumn, with promoter Kalle Sauerland recently suggesting such a possibility.
McKenna provided an update to the BBC, stating that the hope is to secure Fury for a later date this year. He indicated that a world-class event of that magnitude could also pave the way for a Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park. Taylor, the Irish boxing icon, has expressed a wish to retire after a bout at the venue.
'A lot of stars need to align,' McKenna said, citing the need for agreement from Taylor's manager, promoter, and Fury's promoter. He added that he is confident all parties recognise Taylor as one of Ireland's greatest sporting athletes and that finishing her career at Croke Park would be a 'wow' moment.
The Independent has approached a representative of Taylor for comment. On Saturday, Fury will face Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having emerged from retirement for the fifth time. The 37-year-old has reiterated his desire to face Joshua next.
Joshua, 36, is expected to return to the ring this summer, though likely against a different opponent before any clash with Fury. His promoter Eddie Hearn has talked up Joshua's comeback following a car crash in Nigeria in December, which claimed the lives of two teammates. Joshua recently knocked out Jake Paul in Miami.
