Fulham are advancing in talks over a deal for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles as they look to secure their third signing of the summer. The club is working on a deal worth around £25 million for the former Manchester City academy graduate.
Interest and Competition
The 22-year-old has attracted significant interest this summer following an impressive season with Southampton, which saw them reach the Championship play-offs before being eliminated due to the Spygate scandal. Leeds United have had two bids for Charles rejected, but Fulham are now believed to be leading the race for his signature.
Fulham's Transfer Activity
Fulham are looking to bolster their midfield, with Sasa Lukic entering the final year of his contract and attracting interest from newly promoted Ipswich Town. The club recently completed the signing of 21-year-old midfielder Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid for around £8.5 million and are reportedly interested in Real Madrid teenager Thiago Pitarch.
Additionally, Alvaro Arbeloa has raided his former club to sign striker Gonzalo Garcia for a fee in the region of £34.3 million. The 22-year-old has been brought in as a replacement for veteran forward Raul Jimenez.
Charles' Profile and Upcoming Fixtures
Charles has over 100 Championship appearances under his belt and is seen as a key addition to Fulham's ageing squad. Southampton start their new season this weekend when they travel to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup first round. Fulham, meanwhile, continue their pre-season preparations with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Crystal Palace on Friday.
