Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have a five-point blueprint for appointing Liverpool's next manager, which shaped the recruitment of Arne Slot last year and could be used again if the Dutchman's position becomes untenable. The criteria emerged from the search to replace Jurgen Klopp, reflecting FSG's long-term approach to running the club.
The five key requirements were: experience at a big club, a proven trophy-winning track record, commitment to a long-term project, ability to maximise the academy's potential, and alignment with FSG's financial model. The owners did not expect any candidate to meet all criteria, but those who satisfied most were shortlisted.
Arne Slot initially seemed to lack top-club experience, but his work at Feyenoord—winning the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 and the KNVB Cup the following season—demonstrated his ability to win trophies and develop young players. He also showed long-term commitment by staying at Feyenoord and accepted Liverpool's restrained transfer spending without complaint. However, after a recent downturn in form, including a 3-3 draw with Leeds and Mo Salah's public criticism of being benched, Slot's position is under threat. Should he be dismissed, FSG may return to the same five-point plan to find his successor.
