Thomas Frank Makes Feelings Clear on Pochettino Return Chants
Thomas Frank has openly acknowledged the deep affection Tottenham Hotspur supporters hold for former manager Mauricio Pochettino, describing the Argentine as a "true legend" of the club. This comes as Spurs fans have increasingly voiced their desire for Pochettino's return during matches, a sentiment Frank says is "well-deserved" given the manager's historic achievements in North London.
Pochettino's Enduring Legacy at Tottenham
Mauricio Pochettino's tenure at Tottenham between 2014 and 2019 remains a golden era for the club. Under his leadership, Spurs reached the Champions League final and secured a second-place finish in the Premier League, transforming the team into consistent top-four contenders. Despite not winning silverware, Pochettino's impact was profound, elevating the club's status and fostering a strong connection with supporters.
Since his departure, Tottenham has struggled to replicate that success under a series of managers, including Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte. Ange Postecoglou managed to guide the team to Europa League qualification last season before being dismissed, but the club has failed to return to the heights achieved under Pochettino.
Frank's Miserable Debut Season and Fan Discontent
Thomas Frank's debut season as Tottenham manager has been challenging, with the team currently sitting 15th in the Premier League table, just six points clear of the relegation zone. This poor form has sparked frustration among fans, leading to audible chants for Pochettino's return during recent matches.
Frank, who has met Pochettino on several occasions, expressed his admiration for the former Spurs boss. "I met Mauricio a few times, great guy, a great coach," Frank stated. "I think he's a legend here. I don't think he won a trophy, but he was part of transforming the club, from where it was at that stage, to where it ended up in terms of being close to winning the Premier League title. Getting into the Champions League final."
He added, "If you are close, then you are very close to winning it. Sometimes it's football, it's margins. Pochettino did a top job here and is a true legend, so if the fans sing his name it's well deserved."
Call for Support Amid Relegation Battle
While understanding the fans' sentiments, Frank has urged Tottenham supporters to rally behind the current squad as they fight to avoid relegation. Emphasising the team's desperation for victories, Frank highlighted the importance of focusing on upcoming matches, starting with a crucial fixture against Newcastle.
"There's no doubt we are desperate to win games," Frank asserted. "Desperate. And I'm focusing on Newcastle tomorrow. That's a great opportunity ahead of us against a good team. That's the main thing. Can we go out there and get three points tomorrow? That would be very good."
He continued, "And then climb from there and look forward. That's what we need to do. And that's the main focus. When you haven't won enough, you need to be desperate, because if you're not desperate, you don't understand the situation you're in, in terms of you don't win enough, you need to turn it, and win enough football games. That's what we want for the fans, that's what we want for the team, for the club."
The pressure on Frank is palpable, with Tottenham's struggles this season raising questions about the team's direction. As chants for Pochettino grow louder, Frank faces the dual challenge of improving results on the pitch and winning over a fanbase still nostalgic for past glories.
