Frank Lampard Reveals Pep Guardiola's Influence on Coventry City's Title Win
Frank Lampard on Pep Guardiola's Role in Coventry's Title

Frank Lampard has opened up about how observing Pep Guardiola shaped his managerial journey as he led Coventry City to the Championship title. The Sky Blues secured the crown by an 11-point margin, ending a 25-year absence from the top-flight. While Lampard savoured the promotion celebrations, he acknowledged the hectic summer ahead as the club prepares for Premier League life.

Learning from Guardiola

The 47-year-old former Chelsea midfielder insisted his playing days do not define his coaching style. Instead, watching Guardiola at Manchester City provided crucial early insight. Lampard told The Times: "I went to watch Pep for a few days. I was like, 'Wow, he's so energetic in the middle of the training pitch.' And I went and watched a few other managers, Eddie Howe at one point."

He added: "Then you kind of go, what does a manager look like? What do I want to be? Do I want to be this tactical genius? How do I want to deal with the players? A lot of us are working in a different context to Pep. He deserves to be where he is, but we've all got to work a different pathway."

Adapting Guardiola's Methods

Lampard acknowledged that trying to replicate Guardiola's style exactly would not suit his squad. "To try and play like I think Pep would play with this lot wouldn't necessarily work. So you've got to understand what you want to be," he explained.

Managerial Journey

Lampard's career began with a play-off final at Derby County before returning to Chelsea, where he reached the FA Cup final and secured Champions League qualification in his first season. He departed after 18 months and later battled relegation at Everton before taking over at Coventry in November 2024, succeeding the popular Mark Robins.

He credited his father, Frank Lampard Snr, for instilling a fear of failure. "It probably comes from an upbringing of a tough father who would always be very pushy with me: 'You need to get faster, you need to do that, you won't make it if you don't.' That was probably ingrained in me," Lampard said. "I also had a mum who taught manners and humility. I carry that with me everywhere."
