France secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Paraguay in a World Cup warm-up friendly on Friday, with Kylian Mbappe opening the scoring. The match, played at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, served as preparation for both teams ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
Mbappe Breaks the Deadlock
Mbappe, who has been in outstanding form for Paris Saint-Germain this season, scored the first goal in the 24th minute. The forward latched onto a through ball from Antoine Griezmann and slotted past Paraguay goalkeeper Antony Silva with a composed finish. The goal marked Mbappe's 28th international strike for France.
France Dominate Possession
France dominated possession throughout the match, controlling the tempo and creating numerous chances. Their second goal came in the 55th minute when Olivier Giroud headed in a cross from Adrien Rabiot. Giroud, who recently returned to the French national team after a brief absence, showed his aerial prowess with a powerful header.
The third goal was scored by Ousmane Dembele in the 78th minute. Dembele, who has been plagued by injuries in recent years, showcased his dribbling ability before unleashing a low shot from outside the box that found the bottom corner.
Paraguay Struggle to Create
Paraguay, who failed to qualify for the World Cup, struggled to create clear-cut chances against a solid French defense. Their best opportunity came in the 63rd minute when Miguel Almiron forced a save from French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Lloris, who captained the side, made a routine save to deny the Newcastle United winger.
France coach Didier Deschamps expressed satisfaction with the performance. "It was a good test for us," Deschamps said after the match. "We controlled the game well and created several opportunities. Mbappe's goal was important for his confidence, and the team as a whole showed good cohesion."
World Cup Preparation
The friendly was part of France's preparation for the World Cup, where they will face Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia in Group D. France are the defending champions, having won the tournament in 2018. Paraguay, meanwhile, will use the match as preparation for their upcoming Copa America qualifiers.
France will play their next friendly against Denmark on Tuesday before heading to Qatar for the World Cup.
