Nottingham Forest's Defensive Duo Pavelin and Pechova Target Netball Glory
Tash Pavelin and Jayda Pechova are not just teammates in Nottingham Forest's defensive end; they are firm friends whose partnership is firing the club's bid for glory in the Netball Super League. Previously known as the 'Red Wall', they now embrace the nickname 'Pavlova', but the secret behind their formidable defensive strength might surprise you: ten-pin bowling.
Building a Bond Beyond the Court
When they aren't frustrating shooters in the Netball Super League, Pavelin and Pechova can often be found hitting the ten-pin bowling lanes with housemate Brie Grierson or relaxing at a spa to unwind from the pressures of elite netball. This off-court camaraderie is a key component in how the duo has cultivated a flourishing defensive partnership, which has been instrumental in Nottingham Forest's strong start to the 2026 season.
Under coach Chelsea Pitman, Forest remains well-positioned for a top-four challenge despite recent setbacks against rivals London Pulse and AO Manchester Thunder. Pavelin attributes much of their on-court success to the deep bond shared off the court, which enhances their telepathy during games.
"I love playing with Jay," said Pavelin. "Coming from Bath together, we were both seeking a new team and messaged daily. We were eager to stay connected, so we were thrilled when Forest offered us that chance. It's been amazing to see our connection grow—sometimes we just know what the other needs without words. I'm excited to see this develop even further."
Life Off the Court: Bowling, Spas, and Team Spirit
The pair spends considerable time together, both on and off the court, fostering a close-knit environment that translates into stronger performances. "We all get along really well, and it's nice to have that shared space to return to," Pavelin explained. "Being so close off the court definitely makes us closer on it. We learn about each other on a deeper level, and the entire team is incredibly tight."
While netball discussions are common at home, they make a conscious effort to engage in other activities. "We've gotten into the habit of bowling quite a lot and visiting the spa for some downtime," Pavelin shared. "Jayda is the best bowler. I used to be the worst, but I've improved a bit. They teased me when I used the barriers, so I had to take them down!"
On-Court Success and Statistical Highlights
Their partnership's effectiveness is evident in their impressive statistics. Pechova leads the league with 31 gains, while only Sanmarie Visser has more pick-ups than Pavelin's 10. Pavelin's standout performance earned her the Experience Kissimmee Player of the Match award after Forest's opening victory over London Mavericks, boosting her confidence at her new club.
"Being part of this team has helped me immensely; I feel very supported by everyone around me," she added. "I don't have to worry about anything else. I'm happy playing netball, and that brings out my best performances. Moving from Bath after eight years was a big step, but hearing Chelsea's vision and knowing who else was joining made it an easy decision. I absolutely love it here—the area, the vibe, and the girls make it feel like home quickly."
Aiming for the Top Four and Grand Final Dreams
With Forest's strong start, the focus is now on securing a historic top-four finish. Pavelin credits the club's support for enabling the relatively new franchise to compete at such a high level so swiftly. She hopes to experience the roar of the crowd at this summer's Soft & Gentle Grand Final at the Co-op Live arena.
"Being able to prioritise netball and my performance, rather than juggling it with a full-time job, has been fantastic," she said. "The connection to a club like Forest, with its excellent facilities and staff, has elevated everything. We enter each game with confidence, believing we can win—that's a significant step forward."
"Our goal from the start was always to make the top four and push for the final," Pavelin emphasised. "As a group, we truly believe we deserve to be there, competing for the Grand Final and the title. Playing in front of a loud crowd, where the noise is almost overwhelming, is the best feeling. We all hope to be in that final, with fans cheering us on."
The journey to the Soft & Gentle Grand Final is underway, with tickets available for fans to support Nottingham Forest throughout the season.
