Masked Polish football hooligans armed with batons attacked two coachloads of Spanish fans on a motorway in east-central Poland early on Thursday, police said. The attack occurred ahead of a Europa Conference League match between Jagiellonia Bialystok and Rayo Vallecano.
Police reported that two cars forced the coaches carrying Spanish supporters to stop on the S8 motorway near the village of Prosienica. Several dozen individuals then emerged from a nearby forest, having cut through a fence, and attacked the Spaniards. Three people were taken to hospital, and seven were detained.
Items seized included balaclavas, telescopic batons, wooden sticks, and metal-cutting shears. Rayo Vallecano did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Spanish police said they had no information on the incident.
Jagiellonia Bialystok currently sit ninth in the Conference League table with eight points, while Rayo Vallecano are 12th with seven points. Domestically, Jagiellonia are fourth in the Polish top flight, while Rayo are 12th in La Liga.
