Phil Foden's Alarming Goal Drought Casts Shadow Over Manchester City's Quadruple Quest
Phil Foden has now failed to score in his last seventeen consecutive appearances for Manchester City, a worrying statistic that coincides with a critical phase of the season. The English playmaker's form has flatlined precisely as Pep Guardiola's side pursues an unprecedented quadruple of trophies.
Costly Errors in Title Race
Foden's recent struggles were starkly illustrated during Manchester City's midweek Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest. With City leading 2-1 and just fourteen minutes remaining, Foden lost track of Elliot Anderson, who exploited the space to curl home a twenty-yard equaliser. Guardiola substituted Foden merely sixty seconds later.
The misery compounded as Forest's first equaliser also originated from a loose Foden touch. The resulting 2-2 draw, coupled with Arsenal's victory at Brighton, allowed the Gunners to gain significant ground in the title race.
Peripheral Figure in Crucial Campaign
Foden has become an increasingly peripheral figure within Guardiola's squad. His inclusion in the starting lineup against Forest was a surprise, given he had been benched for the previous two league matches. This marked only his second start in City's last seven Premier League fixtures.
Despite this, Guardiola publicly defended his player. "Step by step, he will be back," the City manager asserted. "We had some very good things in the last game. His dynamics are still there. That is what we want from Phil. Have the courage to be incredibly free in his mind and his soul to express his incredible talent in the final third."
From Promise to Uncertainty
The current slump represents a dramatic reversal from earlier expectations. Following Kevin De Bruyne's summer departure, Foden appeared poised to assume the creative mantle after an impressive Club World Cup showing where he scored three goals in four games.
This season began promisingly with a purple patch of eight goals in nine games between November and December. However, the subsequent seventeen appearances have yielded zero goals, casting doubt on his automatic selection for England's World Cup squad.
Glittering Career at Crossroads
Foden's career statistics remain impressive. Since his Premier League debut in December 2017, the Stockport-born midfielder has amassed six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Champions League, and various individual honours including the PFA Footballer of the Year award.
His standout 2023-24 campaign featured nineteen goals and eight assists in thirty-five league games, culminating in two decisive goals in the title-clinching victory over West Ham. However, last season saw a significant dip with just seven goals and two assists in twenty league starts, partly attributed to ankle injuries sustained in April.
Personal Challenges and Future Prospects
Foden has previously acknowledged personal difficulties affecting his performance. "I've had a lot of things going on off the pitch, mentally," he revealed after last season's FA Cup final. "Sometimes there's things in life bigger than football. This season I've struggled a bit. I've had a lot of ankle pain and played with it in the last couple of months."
With his current contract expiring in June 2027 and no new agreement yet reached, Foden finds himself at a crucial juncture. As Manchester City prepare for critical fixtures including an FA Cup fifth-round tie at Newcastle, a Champions League clash with Real Madrid, and a Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, his ability to rediscover his decisive form could prove instrumental to the club's historic ambitions.
