Darren Fletcher's First Man United Line-Up After Amorim Sacking
Fletcher Picks First Man Utd XI After Amorim Sacking

Manchester United's Under-18 coach, Darren Fletcher, has been thrust into the spotlight, selecting his first senior team line-up for the Red Devils' Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday evening.

A Sudden Change in the Dugout

Fletcher's rapid appointment as caretaker manager came on Monday morning, following the abrupt dismissal of Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim. Amorim was reportedly summoned to the club's Carrington training base after a series of disagreements with the United hierarchy, where he learned his fate.

The club has moved swiftly to install Fletcher on a temporary basis, with plans to name an interim manager to see out the remainder of the season. Former United midfielder Michael Carrick, who had a brief stint in temporary charge in 2021, and ex-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are understood to be the leading candidates for that role.

Fletcher Seeks Fergie's Blessing

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Fletcher revealed a poignant detail about his decision to step up, disclosing that he sought the approval of legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson before accepting the position.

"I don't like to make any major decisions or things without speaking to Sir Alex," Fletcher stated. "That's something I've done since I've been at the club, and since I've left the club, and everything I do."

He emphasised the importance of Ferguson's support, saying: "I wanted to speak to him first, and ultimately to get his blessing to be perfectly honest with you. I think he deserves that respect. He was supportive of it, and he echoed my thoughts which I've always said: it's your job to do the best for Manchester United when you're an employee of the club."

Immediate Impact at Turf Moor

Arriving smartly dressed with the squad at Burnley's ground, Fletcher immediately made his mark by finalising his team selection for the crucial midweek fixture. His first line-up represents a significant moment for the former United midfielder, who now takes on the immense responsibility of steering the club during a period of turmoil.

The immediate focus is on securing a positive result against Burnley, as the club begins its search for a more permanent interim solution. Fletcher's tenure, however brief, is now underway with the full backing of the club's most successful ever manager.
