Arthur Fery will face Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon 2026 quarter-finals, a rematch of their contentious Australian Open encounter earlier this year. The British wildcard has been the standout story of the tournament, becoming the sole British survivor in either singles draw after just two rounds.
Fery's Remarkable Run at SW19
The 23-year-old defeated Damir Dzumhur in his opening match before overcoming Otto Virtanen. He then battled through a gruelling 4-hour 38-minute five-set epic against Belgian number one Zizou Bergs. Most recently, Fery stunned Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) to book his place in the last eight.
This is Fery's maiden Grand Slam quarter-final appearance, and he now faces ninth seed Cobolli for a spot in the semi-finals.
Australian Open Controversy
The pair met at the Australian Open in January, where Fery scored an upset victory over the 20th seed. However, the opening set was overshadowed by a controversial incident. At 3-3, Fery held two break points and ventured close to the net during a rally. He struck down the line, and Cobolli's cross-court attempt sailed wide.
Cobolli immediately questioned whether Fery had touched the net, which is illegal in tennis. The Italian protested to the umpire and requested a video review. The review took considerable time, frustrating both players.
TNT Sports commentator Paul Hand noted: "It's a good call. Did he indeed touch the net before the ball went out? They will go upstairs and check that out." After the prolonged wait, Hand added: "A curious look from Flavio Cobolli to the umpire to say, can we crack on with things please? Pretty agile there, contorting his body out of the way of the net, looks like he didn't touch it."
Ultimately, it was determined that Fery had not touched the net, and the match continued. Reflecting on the incident, Fery said: "I knew I hadn't really touched the net, so I guess more time to recover."
Looking Ahead to the Quarter-Final
Fery went on to win the opening set in a tie-break and secured a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-1 victory. He will now aim to repeat that result when he steps onto Centre Court to face Cobolli once more.
