Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez posted "Time for the real stuff" on Instagram, signaling his readiness for competitive action. New manager Derek McInnes and the Rangers support will hope so, as Fernandez was the club's Player of the Year last season.
However, his first campaign in Glasgow ended with a title collapse, with Rangers shipping 17 goals in seven post-split games. Fernandez was part of that rearguard, and concentration lapses have been a recurring issue.
Pre-season warning signs
In pre-season friendlies against St Etienne and West Ham, Fernandez showed signs that his focus remains patchy. Against the French side, every dangerous attack in the first half came down his side. Against West Ham, while looking more solid with new partner Ben Godfrey, McInnes was still visibly frustrated at some of Fernandez's decision-making.
The 25-year-old has admitted himself that laser-like focus is an area he needs to improve. But his casual style – including the occasional Cruyff turn in his own box – could test the patience of a manager who demands defensive solidity.
Competition intensifies
With South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya arriving for £3 million, Fernandez now faces serious competition. Godfrey also looks like a natural defender. McInnes has built his success on a rock-solid backline, and won't hesitate to leave Fernandez out if standards slip.
Fernandez has attracted interest from Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, and earned his first Nigeria caps. But if he doesn't cut out the lapses, he might struggle to get into Rangers' team, let alone secure a big move.
The real stuff begins
The season opens at Dundee United on Friday night. It's time for Fernandez to prove he's ready for the real stuff – and that his concentration is finally where it needs to be.
