Bruno Fernandes Foresaw Benjamin Sesko's Manchester United Resurgence
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had predicted a significant upturn in form for striker Benjamin Sesko, well before the Slovenian international began his impressive scoring streak under interim managers Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher. This foresight came prior to the sacking of former manager Ruben Amorim, under whom Sesko initially struggled to find his footing at Old Trafford.
Sesko's Scoring Surge Under New Leadership
Since the departure of Ruben Amorim, Benjamin Sesko has transformed into a key attacking threat for Manchester United, finding the net six times in his last eight Premier League appearances. This remarkable turnaround has breathed new life into United's Champions League ambitions, showcasing the striker's adaptability and growing confidence within the squad.
The 22-year-old forward, who arrived from RB Leipzig in a high-profile summer transfer alongside other signings like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens, initially managed just two goals before the new year. However, his current form sees him averaging a goal every 162.5 minutes on the pitch, a statistic that underscores his rapid development and increased impact in crucial matches.
Fernandes' Early Confidence in Sesko's Potential
In October, Bruno Fernandes publicly expressed his belief in Sesko's ability to adapt and improve, despite the striker's early challenges. "Ben is very eager to learn and that's very good from someone that has done very well in the Bundesliga and everything, came with the biggest, probably like the price tag and everything," Fernandes stated. "But in his mind, he's like, I want to learn, I want to become better."
Fernandes further highlighted Sesko's competitive transformation during matchdays, noting, "Then on the weekends, he transforms himself into a different person on the pitch. He's someone that is like, 'I know what I have to do. I want to score goals, I'm going to get into the box, I'm going to get into duels. I'm going to win my headers'. And that's very important for us." This assessment has proven accurate as Sesko's performances have notably intensified under the new managerial setup.
Impact of Managerial Changes on Sesko's Form
Sesko's scoring streak ignited immediately after Ruben Amorim's dismissal, with the striker netting a brace against Burnley under caretaker boss Darren Fletcher. He continued his form by scoring in Fletcher's other match in charge, a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, demonstrating his ability to perform consistently despite the team's transitional phase.
Under Michael Carrick's interim leadership, Sesko initially featured as a substitute, making impactful appearances against top-tier opponents. He scored three times in five substitute outings against Fulham, West Ham, and Everton, before earning a starting role and finding the net in a home victory over Crystal Palace. Although his scoring run was interrupted in a midweek loss to Newcastle, Carrick has publicly praised Sesko's development and growing self-assurance.
"I think it's pretty clear [his confidence], we've all seen it. He's gradually building since he came to the club and over the season," Carrick told TNT Sports. "That's part of learning and developing and getting used to being around different environments. Confidence as a striker, scoring goals helps massively but his performances away from that and how he's improving all the time is exactly what we'd hoped and what he hoped when he came to the club."
This period of resurgence highlights not only Sesko's individual talent but also the broader dynamics at Manchester United, where managerial shifts have catalysed key players' performances. As the club navigates its Champions League charge, Sesko's form, anticipated by Fernandes, remains a critical factor in their ongoing campaign.
