Ferguson questions Jaissle after Newcastle Everton losses

Duncan Ferguson has said he does not see what Matthias Jaissle has brought to Newcastle United after watching the side lose to Everton three times in a few months. The former Newcastle and Everton striker believes the fans are getting restless on Tyneside after a poor run of results that leaves the team needing a win and a positive performance against Fulham this weekend before the international break.

Three defeats to Everton

Ferguson, now manager of Northern Ireland side Glentoran, watched Newcastle's encounters with Everton this season. The two sides met at Murrayfield in a pre-season friendly, where Everton ran out 3-1 winners, before recording a victory by the same scoreline in the Carabao Cup at the end of October at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

While Newcastle's performance was better in the cup clash, they lost 1-0 at St James' Park to the Toffees in Monday night's Premier League encounter, when they struggled to create chances before a series of mistakes allowed Everton to snatch a winner.

Ferguson's verdict on Jaissle

Ferguson, who scored 12 goals in 41 appearances for United in a two-year stay in between lengthy spells at Everton, admitted he has not been particularly impressed with head coach Jaissle, who was brought in over the summer following Eddie Howe's decision to leave.

"I do think Newcastle fans are a bit restless up there with that manager," he told Sky Bet's Overlap Daily. "I watched Everton vs Newcastle in the summer in a pre-season game, in Edinburgh, and Everton battered them there as well, put three past them.

"It was a competitive game, because I actually passed comment to one of the boys that went with me: 'Look at the Newcastle manager, he's taking it seriously'. He was running up and down the touchline like this, giving it the big licks in a pre-season game. We would just class them as bounce games, wouldn't we?

"But they got battered. Everton put three past them. Then they beat them again at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. That's three times Everton have beaten them, and he's shipped seven goals in the three games. I know one was a pre-season game, but he was taking it seriously.

"So, I think fans are getting a bit restless. I don't see it in the boy, to be honest. I don't see why you would be bringing him from wherever he's been brought from into the Newcastle job, after Eddie Howe had done a good job there, a very good job.

"He won them a cup, got them competitive, and they were pushing man for man up the pitch. What I'm hearing is they're a bit more passive, a bit more negative now. So, I think he could be under pressure, that lad."
