Ferguson hints at Bologna exit in 2028 and Rangers move

Lewis Ferguson has hinted that he could leave Bologna in 2028 when his contract expires, and the Scotland midfielder has reiterated his desire to play for boyhood club Rangers one day.

The 27-year-old's comments follow a revelation from his father Derek that a move to Rangers was on the cards last summer. Ferguson is set to help Scotland finish their Nations League campaign later this month, with Sebastien Pocognoli's side facing North Macedonia and Switzerland.

Contract and Future Plans

Speaking from the Emilia-Romagna region, Ferguson opened up on his long-term future at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium. He said: "I had some offers, but I wanted to work out exactly what to do with my life – whether to change direction or carry on as I was."

He added: "Then I thought: 'Bologna has given me so much'. On top of that, I played in the Champions League, won the Coppa Italia and lifted it as captain, the Europa League where, if we hadn’t come up against Aston Villa, we’d have reached the final."

"And the moments of friendship here through the tough times, like my injury. In short, I took my time and then said just four words...'Bologna is my home'. And I want to stay here for at least another year. Bologna has felt like home from day one – I’ll say it again – and I’m having a brilliant time here."

Rangers Ambition and Leadership

On a potential move to Rangers, Ferguson said: "Rangers? Let’s just say that sooner or later I’ll go there - one day I know it’ll happen. But for now, I am only thinking about today."

Ferguson has captained Bologna on dozens of occasions and credited Scotland captain Andy Robertson for helping him understand the responsibility. He said: "I have learned from Andrew Robertson, he's a Scottish icon and in his next international matches he'll set a record for international appearances, passing the legendary Kenny Dalglish. Me? I'm not one to shout in the dressing room. I prefer to show it by playing as well as I can."

Ferguson was a standout for Scotland during the disappointing World Cup campaign last summer and has carried that form into the current Serie A season, having played more minutes than any other midfielder in Italy's top flight.
