Moises Caicedo has spoken out after his Chelsea debut ended in disappointment, with the British record £115 million signing conceding it was not the start he had hoped for. The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined from Brighton last week, was introduced as a second-half substitute during Chelsea's 3-1 defeat at West Ham.
Caicedo struggled to impose himself on the game and gave away a late penalty with a clumsy challenge on Emerson Palmieri, allowing West Ham to seal the victory from the spot. The Ecuador international was criticised by pundits, including Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher, who described his performance as a 'nightmare'.
In a post on Instagram, Caicedo thanked fans for their support and vowed to improve. He wrote: 'It wasn't the debut that I expected. But I'm happy to get my first minutes with this big club. We'll keep working hard to put this team where it deserves. Thanks to the fans who are supporting me.'
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted Caicedo would probably be disappointed but backed him to bounce back. 'Many positive things and he is maybe disappointed but we need to move on and he will be a good player for us,' Pochettino said after the match.
