A comprehensive survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) has delivered a damning verdict on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in football, revealing that an overwhelming majority of supporters are firmly against its continued use. The findings, based on responses from 7,981 fans, indicate that more than 75 per cent of participants oppose VAR, highlighting a significant disconnect between fan sentiment and the technology's implementation in the sport.
Worsening Match-Day Experience
Since VAR was introduced to the Premier League in the 2019-20 season, fans have reported a notable decline in their overall match-going experience. The survey shows that over 90 per cent of supporters believe VAR has made attending games less enjoyable, citing issues such as disrupted spontaneity and prolonged delays. This sentiment is further reinforced by the fact that more than 85 per cent of respondents feel VAR makes football less entertaining overall, undermining the excitement and flow of the game.
Confusion and Lack of Clarity
Adding to the frustration, the survey uncovered that over 75 per cent of fans are unclear about the reasons for VAR's use in stadiums, often leaving them confused during key moments. This lack of transparency has contributed to a sense of alienation among supporters, who feel disconnected from the decision-making process that impacts the outcomes of matches they attend.
