Jockey Cieren Fallon delivered an emotional victory at Newcastle's All-Weather Finals Day, dedicating his win in the £150,000 Sprint Handicap to his late friend and fellow rider Stefano Cherchi on the two-year anniversary of Cherchi's tragic death.
A Poignant Tribute on the Track
Fallon, riding the William Haggas-trained gelding Wiltshire, guided his mount to a one-length victory at odds of 7-1 in Friday's feature race at Gosforth Park. Immediately after crossing the finish line, an emotional Fallon raised his hand and blew a kiss toward the sky in a heartfelt gesture to his departed friend.
Remembering Stefano Cherchi
Stefano Cherchi, originally from Sardinia, was a popular figure in British racing who had ridden 106 winners in Britain before his untimely death at age 23. The tragedy occurred in 2024 when Cherchi was seriously injured during a race fall at Canberra while on a riding trip to Australia. He succumbed to his injuries two weeks later in hospital with his parents and girlfriend Brittany Fallon—daughter of former champion jockey Kieren Fallon and sister of Cieren—at his bedside.
"Two years ago today we lost Stef and I thoroughly believe he opened up all them gaps for me today," Fallon said in a post-race interview. "Heaven gained an angel two years ago today. It's very tough for me and the family."
A Significant Victory After Challenges
The win marked a significant achievement for both horse and rider. Wiltshire, a six-year-old gelding who hadn't won since June 2024, had previously struggled with poor starts that repeatedly compromised his chances. The horse arrived at Newcastle having undergone a wind operation to address breathing issues.
This time, Wiltshire broke cleanly from the gates and Fallon expertly guided him through the field, taking the lead well inside the final furlong to secure the victory. "Wiltshire has given many lengths away at the start in the past and the team have done a great job with his gate speed," Fallon explained. "He was able to jump away on terms today. I just latched on to the back of them, and he has travelled into it really well."

The racing community has felt Cherchi's loss deeply since his passing. As a popular member of the weighing room, his death sent shockwaves through the sport. Fallon's tribute highlighted the close bonds that form among jockeys who share the unique dangers and triumphs of their profession.
"It wasn't a punch of air, it was a point to him," Fallon clarified about his post-race gesture. "It's an emotional day for us all and I'm just glad this horse has won well for me today."
