Oliver Glasner has emerged as a candidate to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but the Austrian's history of speaking out against his employers could prove a challenge for Ineos. Glasner, who has transformed Crystal Palace since his appointment in February 2024, is reportedly keen on the Old Trafford job with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
The 51-year-old has already shown he is not afraid to criticise his club's hierarchy. Following Palace's defeat to United at Selhurst Park, where his side looked fatigued, Glasner publicly called for more investment. 'It's the first time in your history that you play European football,' he said. 'So let's invest instead of saving. It was our 22nd game and it was [United's] 14th game. I could see they were physically better.'
This is not an isolated incident. At Wolfsburg, Glasner clashed with sporting director Jorg Schmadtke over a lack of attacking reinforcements after the club qualified for the Europa League in 2020. He eventually lost his job for speaking out too often, a fate similar to Amorim's at United.
Ineos, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, must be aware that appointing Glasner will not guarantee an easy ride. Like Amorim, who reportedly told Ratcliffe to 'f*** off' during disagreements, Glasner wears his heart on his sleeve. The decision-makers, including Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, should not expect a 'yes-man' if they turn to the Palace manager.
