Ex-Liverpool Star Steve Nicol Criticises Mo Salah After Shocking Defeat to Wolves
Liverpool's aspirations for Champions League qualification suffered a significant blow on Tuesday, as they fell to a surprising 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite scoring a goal, Mo Salah's overall performance has come under intense scrutiny, with former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol describing one of his decisions as 'horrible'.
Wolves Stun Reds in Premier League Upset
Wolves, who entered the match as the Premier League's bottom-placed team with only two home victories all season, delivered a clinical performance to secure a dramatic win. Rodrigo Gomes opened the scoring in the 78th minute, but Salah, aged 33, managed to equalise for Arne Slot's side shortly after. However, Liverpool failed to hold on, as Andre Gomes' stoppage-time strike deflected off Joe Gomez to seal the victory for Wolves.
Statistically, Wolves were highly efficient, scoring from half of their four attempts on goal. In stark contrast, Liverpool unleashed 19 shots, with Salah's goal coming somewhat fortuitously due to an error by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. This result could see Liverpool drop to sixth place in the league standings, intensifying pressure on the team.
Steve Nicol Highlights Salah's Lacklustre Display
Steve Nicol, a former Liverpool star who spent 13 trophy-laden years at Anfield, did not hold back in his assessment of Salah's contribution. Speaking on ESPN, Nicol pointed out a specific moment that epitomised Liverpool's struggles. 'In the final third, the decision was just horrible,' he stated. 'The one we showed in the highlight with Mo Salah... although he scored the goal the goalie should have saved it, and he really didn't contribute anything again all evening.'
Nicol expanded on his criticism, linking Salah's form to Liverpool's broader issues this season. 'I could sit here for 10 minutes and say everything that has gone wrong, but Tuesday was a microcosm of what's gone wrong all season; poor decision-making, the front three done not much at all, and defensively, you concede two goals from two shots.' Salah had previously endured a 10-game Premier League goal drought, his first such streak in his career, highlighting a dip in form coinciding with Liverpool's decline.
Arne Slot Echoes Concerns Over Wastefulness
Liverpool manager Arne Slot echoed Nicol's sentiments, expressing frustration with his team's inability to convert chances from open play. 'Same old story,' Slot lamented. 'Recently, we are picking up points because many times we've scored from set pieces, but what did not change in the last five, six or seven games is that we struggle and find it very hard to score from the open-play chances that we do create.'
Nicol further emphasised the unpredictability of Liverpool's performances, stating, 'My biggest concern is that it doesn't matter who Liverpool play against... they can lose. It's one thing to talk about big games in a season, but when your team is stepping on a field regardless of the situation and you're not sure what you're going to get, that's not acceptable at a club like Liverpool.'
This defeat raises questions about Salah's role in the team and Liverpool's overall consistency as they battle for a top-four finish. The Reds will need to address these issues swiftly to salvage their Champions League ambitions in the remaining fixtures of the season.
