Former England youth international and women's football goalkeeper Amy Carr has died at the age of 35 following a long battle with a brain tumour. Carr, who played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Reading, was first diagnosed in 2015 after blacking out at the sight of a spider, leading to an MRI that revealed a tumour 'the size of a golf ball.'
She underwent a craniotomy to remove as much of the tumour as possible, leaving her unable to walk or talk for eight days. Subsequent radiotherapy, chemotherapy and physiotherapy helped her regain mobility and speech. In 2024, she ran the Dublin Marathon, raising £28,718 for Brain Tumour Research.
Last summer, Carr was told her illness was terminal and given a prognosis of six to nine months. Brain Tumour Research paid tribute, stating: 'We are deeply saddened to hear that Amy Carr has died... Amy showed incredible strength and determination.' Her life will be celebrated on March 23 in Hertfordshire.
