Former Bayern Munich manager Felix Magath has delivered a surprising critique of England captain Harry Kane, suggesting the prolific striker is focusing too much on defensive duties rather than playing to his natural goalscoring strengths.
Magath's Controversial Assessment
Despite Harry Kane enjoying another sensational season with German giants Bayern Munich, where he has netted an impressive 36 goals in just 32 appearances across all competitions, Magath has offered a peculiar criticism of the England skipper's performances.
The 72-year-old former Bayern and Fulham boss told SPORT: "I would always use players according to their strengths. Harry Kane can score goals. He's praised by everyone and everyone cheers that he also runs around at the back. But that's not his job."
Questioning Kane's Positioning
Magath elaborated on his viewpoint, stating: "Kane can clear as many balls at the back as he wants, but he helps the team more when he stands up front, waits, gets the ball and puts it in the net. If he were to run around up front instead of in midfield or at the back, that would be better for the team."
This criticism echoes similar observations made during Kane's time at Tottenham Hotspur, where pundits occasionally questioned his tendency to drop deep rather than remain in advanced attacking positions.
Kompany's Contrasting View
Current Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany has offered a markedly different perspective on Kane's contributions, praising the forward's intelligent movement and overall impact.
Speaking earlier this month, Kompany said: "He has so much experience and knows exactly when and where to move into the gaps. He's constantly communicating with his teammates. He finds a good balance between distance and proximity to the defenders."
The Belgian manager added: "He's always very attentive when it comes to second balls. He can also score goals from 25 meters; he has a wide range of options for scoring goals."
Contract Situation and Future
Kane's current contract with Bayern Munich is scheduled to run until next summer, with the striker having been linked with a potential return to the Premier League. However, discussions regarding a new deal are reportedly already underway.
Bayern's board member for sport, Max Eberl, confirmed: "We're talking and it's clear to everyone that there has to be a decision at some stage. We're waiting for an answer from [the defender Dayot Upamecano] and we're talking with Harry."
Continuing Bayern's Title Challenge
Kane will be aiming to extend his brilliant goalscoring form this weekend as Bayern Munich welcome Hoffenheim to the Allianz Arena. Kompany's side currently sit six points clear of nearest rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Bundesliga summit, with Kane's contributions proving instrumental to their title defence.
The debate surrounding Kane's playing style continues to divide opinion, with Magath's comments highlighting the ongoing discussion about whether world-class strikers should prioritise defensive contributions or focus exclusively on their attacking responsibilities.
