Everton's pre-season defeat to Stuttgart (3-1) has reignited concerns over their long-standing right-back problem, with Jake O'Brien once again forced into the position. The search for a specialist has lasted over 18 months, and despite interest in Celtic's Alistair Johnston, no deal has been agreed.
O'Brien's recurring role
O'Brien was expected to partner Jarrad Branthwaite in central defence, but Tim Iroegbunam's early injury prompted a reshuffle, pushing O'Brien to right-back. This has become a familiar scenario, with the Irishman often filling in there due to a lack of natural options.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham even commented on the issue, saying: "Poor old Jake can't do another season there." The club has been linked with several targets, but negotiations have stalled, leaving the position unresolved ahead of the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.
Midfield congestion
In contrast, central midfield is crowded, with new signing Christian Norgaard yet to feature. Harrison Armstrong and Hayden Hackney showed promise, but competition will intensify once James Garner returns. The experiment of using Charly Alcaraz in midfield was abandoned after Iroegbunam's injury.
Ndiaye's return
Iliman Ndiaye made his comeback as a substitute, but his future remains uncertain. Despite interest from Al Hilal, his father has stated he is "not going anywhere," and Everton insist he is not for sale. Ndiaye had two stoppage-time efforts cleared off the line, continuing his recent finishing struggles.
Captaincy question
With Seamus Coleman's departure, the captaincy is undecided. James Tarkowski has worn the armband recently, but there is speculation that Moyes might hand it to a younger player like Branthwaite, who captained England's U21s and led Everton out in Stuttgart.
