Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has reportedly set himself a 16-game deadline to prove his worth at Old Trafford, with a potential exit still possible. The 20-year-old has struggled for game time under manager Ruben Amorim this season, making only one start in the Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town.
Mainoo's lack of playing time follows a summer of speculation about a move away from United. Italian side Napoli were rumoured to be interested, and it was claimed the academy product was open to a loan move. While that did not materialise, uncertainty continues to surround his future.
According to ESPN, Mainoo is eager for more action in the coming months. If that does not happen, he may have to consider other options. A loan move to Napoli could still be on the cards, but United would need to secure a replacement before letting him go.
Mainoo's contract runs for just under two more years, although the club has an option to extend it for another season. When asked about Mainoo's role, Amorim said: 'He is fighting for the position now with Bruno (Fernandes). He just needs to fight for the position with Bruno in training. Like it should be at Manchester United.'
Since his breakthrough in the 2022/23 season, Mainoo has made 74 senior appearances for United, scoring seven goals.
