Alan Shearer has warned that Enzo Maresca is under increasing pressure at Chelsea following a 3-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. The Blues led through Enzo Fernandez's early goal but imploded after Trevoh Chalobah's red card early in the second half. Danny Welbeck scored twice and Maxim De Cuyper added another to leave Chelsea with back-to-back Premier League losses.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said: "I think as a Chelsea manager, once you accept that position, you know that you are under pressure if you lose matches – and they've lost two. That's the rule of management, I guess, but more so when you are at Chelsea. You can't lose games and they've now lost two."
Maresca acknowledged the team's errors, stating: "We were in control of the game... And then suddenly, because of our mistake, and then with the red card, the plan completely changed." He added that the club has not mentioned anything to him regarding his position, saying "the club didn't mention me nothing, so there is not any news."
Chelsea now face a crucial Champions League tie against Benfica on Tuesday, before hosting Premier League champions Liverpool next Saturday. Defeat against Brighton was their second successive league loss after falling at Manchester United the previous week.
