The Swope Soccer Village, situated just outside Kansas City, is undergoing significant modifications to accommodate England's preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Notably, privacy fences are being doubled in height to ensure maximum seclusion for the players. This move aims to create a hidden, tucked-away environment where the squad can train without external distractions.
Local boss Jared Belzer emphasized the site's inherent privacy, stating, "One of the best perks about Swope is the privacy." However, he confirmed that fence height increases are among several adjustments being made to tailor the complex for England's needs. The facility, which has served as a training ground for U.S. national teams and local clubs since 2007, is being transformed into a 'home away from home' for the Three Lions.
Strategic Base Selection and Player Comfort
England will reside at The Inn at Meadowbrook, a boutique hotel charging approximately £200 per night, chosen for its intimate atmosphere and enhanced privacy. Players will be transported via bus to the nearby Swope Soccer Village for daily training sessions. Tuchel highlighted the importance of this setup, explaining that it avoids large, impersonal hotels and allows for a more condensed, focused environment.
He remarked, "We chose a hotel where you can open the window, where it's an intimate and small place. I think once we get used to that place, it makes sense to go back." Feedback from players indicates they appreciate the late starts and condensed schedule, which helps maintain engagement throughout the tournament.
Facility Upgrades and Community Collaboration
Additional enhancements at Swope Soccer Village include the construction of a studio for the 'Lions' Den' on the grass field and the installation of an outdoor gym. The existing weight room will be converted into a Players' Lounge to foster relaxation and team bonding. Alan Dietrich, involved in the preparations, noted that England's interest in Kansas City was a "no brainer" after initial discussions, with local authorities and ownership fully committed to supporting the team.
Dietrich elaborated, "We talked about it and were like: 'Alright, City, are you prepared to handle this?' 'Yes.' 'Ownership, are you prepared to handle this?' 'Absolutely.'" This collaboration ensures that England will have exclusive access to the fields during their stay, with other local teams temporarily relocated.
Luxury Amenities and Tournament Aspirations
The Inn at Meadowbrook offers amenities such as an outdoor pool and hot tub, with several top-quality golf courses nearby. A well-stocked wine cellar features premium options, including a £750 Californian Red and a £190 Rose champagne reserved for potential victory celebrations. Tuchel expressed delight with the selection, underscoring the team's goal to treat the complex as their permanent base this summer.
