England fans face the prospect of another sleepless night if Thomas Tuchel's side beat DR Congo and reach the last 16 of the World Cup. The Three Lions take on DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday (5pm UK time) for a place in the knockout stage's next round.
England's path to the last 16
It is England's first-ever meeting with the African nation and comes after Tuchel's men topped Group L with wins over Croatia and Panama, plus a draw against Ghana. The winner of that tie will now travel to Mexico City after Mexico secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 32.
That means, if England overcome DR Congo, they will face the tournament co-hosts at the famous Azteca Stadium on Sunday evening local time. For supporters back in the UK, however, the match is scheduled to kick off at 1am UK time on Monday morning, with the game unlikely to finish until around 3am.
Challenges of the Azteca Stadium
The awkward kick-off presents a dilemma for England supporters, many of whom will have work just a few hours later, should the Three Lions progress. Mexico will also have home advantage in front of what is expected to be a packed and hostile Azteca crowd, while the stadium sits around 2,240 metres above sea level, with the altitude long regarded as one of the toughest challenges in international football.
Mexico have already looked comfortable in those conditions during the tournament and underlined their credentials by beating a strong Ecuador side to book their place in the last 16. England, meanwhile, have yet to fully convince despite progressing as group winners.
England's group stage performance
They opened with a 4-2 win over Croatia before drawing 0-0 with Ghana and defeating Panama 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Before any thoughts turn to Mexico, though, England must first navigate a potentially awkward test against DR Congo.
Should they do so, they will not only have to cope with the middle-of-the-night kick-off for fans back home but also one of the most intimidating assignments of the tournament, with Mexico boasting an outstanding record at the Azteca and the backing of a fervent home crowd.
