England reached the World Cup quarter-finals with a narrow 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Jude Bellingham's quickfire brace in the first half put Thomas Tuchel's side in control, but Mexico fought back through Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez, setting up a tense finish. England will now face Norway and Erling Haaland in Miami.
Storm Delays Kick-Off
The match was delayed by an hour due to a storm, but England adapted well to the 2,200-metre altitude. Jordan Pickford made a key save early on to deny Jimenez's header, keeping the score level.
Bellingham's Brace
England took the lead in the 36th minute when Pickford's throw found Declan Rice, who drove forward and played wide to Bukayo Saka. Saka's clipped cross was headed home by Bellingham. Two minutes later, pressure from Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon forced a turnover, and Bellingham converted Kane's low cross from close range.
Mexico Responds
Mexico pulled one back just before half-time when Quinones fired home after England failed to clear a free-kick. The home crowd erupted, and Jimenez struck wide and saw a header tipped over by Pickford.
Red Card and Penalties
Early in the second half, England right-back Quansah was sent off for a clumsy challenge on Jesus Gallardo after a VAR review. Tuchel responded by replacing Saka with John Stones. Despite being a man down, England restored their two-goal lead in the 60th minute when Anthony Gordon was brought down by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, and Kane converted the penalty.
Mexico were awarded a penalty of their own when Kane was adjudged to have caught Brian Gutierrez while clearing. Jimenez beat Pickford in the 69th minute, setting up a frantic finish.
England Hold On
Tuchel made defensive substitutions to shore up the backline. England survived several scares, including Stones prodding just wide of his own goal in the 11th minute of stoppage time. The visitors held on to secure a dramatic victory.
