Unai Emery admitted Aston Villa squandered a “very good opportunity” as their Premier League title aspirations suffered a significant setback. The Villa manager was visibly frustrated after Thierno Barry’s stunning strike ended their run of 11 consecutive home wins in all competitions, with Everton securing a 1-0 victory at Villa Park.
Emery expressed his disappointment at missing the chance to move second in the table, closing the gap on leaders Arsenal. The Spanish coach also confirmed that captain John McGinn went off with a knee injury, adding to concerns with Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana already sidelined. “We lost a very good opportunity,” Emery said. “We created chances, we didn't score. They had fewer chances than us and scored. They competed fantastically.”
Emery suggested the club may need to look at the transfer market to address recent injuries, with England striker Tammy Abraham reportedly on their radar. He acknowledged the need to replace players who are leaving and stressed the importance of recovering their positive momentum. “It is another opportunity for other players to play,” he added. “We have enough players to get the performance we need.”
Everton manager David Moyes praised his team’s all-round display, despite seeing Jake O’Brien’s goal controversially disallowed by VAR due to an offside decision against Harrison Armstrong. Barry’s exceptional finish proved decisive, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper. Moyes said: “It was a great finish. It was incredibly satisfying. It was a brilliant performance - especially with what we had coming here.”
The defeat leaves Villa still in contention for a top-four finish, but Emery’s side failed to capitalise on Arsenal’s slip-up. With McGinn’s injury potentially adding to their problems, Villa face a testing period as they look to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.
