Unai Emery Issues Public Challenge to Underperforming Jadon Sancho
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has delivered a blunt message to Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, stating he "expects more" from the England winger following a slow start to his spell in the Midlands.
Sancho's Struggling Loan Spell at Villa Park
The 25-year-old forward joined Villa on a season-long loan from Manchester United last summer, but has managed just one goal so far – a Europa League strike against Fenerbahce last month. His first Premier League goal contribution came only at the weekend, providing the assist for Morgan Rogers' opener against Bournemouth.
While acknowledging Sancho's gradual improvement, Emery made clear his expectations remain unmet. "Hopefully he is getting better and he can help us in this process like he is, getting better," the Spanish manager said. "I expect more from him, and because I am positive, hopefully he will give us it."
A Pattern of Loan Moves and Contract Uncertainty
Sancho's current situation continues a pattern of temporary moves away from Old Trafford. The winger spent the second half of the 2023/24 season back at former club Borussia Dortmund, followed by a loan spell at Chelsea last term that included a £25 million obligation to buy – though Chelsea ultimately paid £5 million to cancel that agreement.
With his Manchester United contract expiring this summer, Sancho has yet to sign a new deal with the Red Devils, casting further uncertainty over his long-term future.
Emery's Broader Squad Message
Sancho is not the only Villa player to receive a public challenge from Emery. The manager also addressed several other squad members, including Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, who re-joined on loan from Juventus in January despite reported Chelsea interest.
"Douglas Luiz, Onana, Barkley, and Bogarde have a huge responsibility to replace the injured players – McGinn, Tielemans and Kamara," Emery explained. "Those three are here for a long time and were performing here in high demands being successful."
Emery elaborated on individual expectations: "Now Onana must be consistent, trying to avoid injuries. He played a fantastic match. We needed him from defensive set-pieces. After one year and a half away from here, Luiz is needed, to recover him doing the tasks in our demands. He improved from the first match, but there is still work to do to get his best."
The Villa boss added: "Barkley is a fantastic player and he is getting fit again. He is getting confidence and will be important for us. Bogarde is always versatile and helps us. To replace the players we had before, it is very important."
As Villa continue their push in domestic and European competitions, Emery's public comments signal his determination to extract maximum performance from all squad members – with Sancho's development remaining a particular focus.
