Elliot Anderson Thanks Supporters After Mother's Death

Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received following the death of his mother, Helen. The 23-year-old returned to action in Sunday's 4-1 victory over Burnley at the City Ground, where a minute's applause was held in her memory.

Anderson had missed Thursday's Europa League win over Porto due to the family bereavement but made himself available for the weekend match. Before kick-off, he laid a bouquet on the pitch, accompanied by teammate Neco Williams, who placed a shirt bearing the number eight and 'mum' with the flowers.

The home crowd sang his 'Geordie Maradona' chant throughout the game, and he was praised by head coach Vitor Pereira and hat-trick hero Morgan Gibbs-White for his courage. After the match, Anderson posted on Instagram: 'All for you Mum. @morgangibbswhite congratulations brother.' He also shared a story with a heart emoji and the caption: 'Thank you so much for the support over the last few days.'

In a previous tribute, Anderson wrote: 'Mum, You are the most special person I could of ever met. Laughing, smiling and dancing through every day giving us all such joy and happiness. You fought so hard for the past year with huge strength and resilience. I am forever grateful for everything you done for our family. Rest in peace mum. Love you so much.'

The football community has rallied around Anderson, with teammates, former clubs Newcastle United, and the England national team sending condolences. Morgan Gibbs-White had also held up a supportive shirt after scoring the winner against Porto.
