Max Dowman scored twice as Arsenal cruised into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 victory over Ipswich at Portman Road. The 16-year-old's double, either side of a Noni Madueke strike, and a Mikel Merino goal sealed the win, with Ipswich scoring two late consolations.
Seven wins from seven for Arsenal
The victory extends Arsenal's perfect start to the season under Mikel Arteta to seven wins from seven games in all competitions. Both managers made sweeping changes, with Gary O'Neil making 10 alterations to the side that beat Crystal Palace 3-2 on Saturday, while Arteta made nine changes following a 2-0 win at Sunderland.
Dowman's standout display
Dowman opened the scoring with a confident run, taking the ball from Viktor Gyokeres and beating Cedric Kipre before firing home. He added a second two minutes after the restart, finishing after good work from Martin Zubimendi. Madueke doubled the lead on 16 minutes with an emphatic finish across Christian Walton after a defensive mix-up.
Zubimendi's new role and Ipswich's cup wait
Zubimendi started at right-back in a new-look back four and provided an assist, though Jack Clarke later skipped past him to set up Anis Mehmeti for a consolation goal. Gyokeres, who has yet to score this season, managed just one shot. Ipswich have now failed to progress beyond the third round in 14 of the last 15 seasons, with their last deep run ending in a semi-final defeat to Arsenal in 2011.
