In a dramatic twist to his turbulent career, Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is poised for a potential return to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer this summer. The 25-year-old England international's contract at Old Trafford expires in June, and he is unlikely to receive a new deal, making him available without a fee.
Sancho's Contract Situation and Loan Spells
Sancho is currently nearing the end of a loan spell at Aston Villa, his third temporary move away from Manchester United since his £73 million signing in 2021. This switch to Villa was a dry loan, meaning no option to buy was included, leaving his future uncertain as he becomes a free agent.
Dortmund's Change of Heart
According to reports from The Times, Borussia Dortmund manager Nico Kovac has reversed his previous stance on not targeting wingers. Last summer, Kovac insisted on a 3-4-2-1 formation, but he has now approved a move for Sancho. The Bundesliga club are keen to re-sign the player who made his name with them after joining from Manchester City in 2017.
Financial Hurdles and Wage Demands
However, any deal would require Sancho to accept a significant pay cut from his current £300,000-a-week wages at Manchester United. Dortmund have prepared for this move by allowing the contracts of players like Julian Brandt, Niklas Sule, and Salih Ozcan to expire, saving approximately £21 million in annual wages to fund new signings.
Sancho's Recent Struggles
Sancho's career has been marked by inconsistency since leaving Dortmund. He spent half a season back on loan at Dortmund in 2024, helping them reach the Champions League final, but a permanent move did not materialise. A subsequent loan to Chelsea last season ended with the Blues paying a £5 million penalty fee to avoid signing him permanently.
At Aston Villa, Sancho has struggled to make an impact, registering only one goal and one assist in 29 appearances across all competitions. Despite this, Villa boss Unai Emery has expressed interest in keeping him, stating in February that Sancho is a "fantastic player" and could secure a new contract at Villa if he improves.
What's Next for Sancho?
With Dortmund optimistic about convincing Sancho to return, the winger is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club. His future remains up in the air, but a reunion with Dortmund could offer him the fresh start he desperately needs to revive his career.
