Braves' Dominic Smith Makes MLB History with Emotional Walk-Off Grand Slam
Dominic Smith's Historic Walk-Off Grand Slam After Mother's Death

Atlanta Braves designated hitter Dominic Smith created a poignant moment in Major League Baseball history on Saturday night, hitting a walk-off grand slam in his debut with the team. This remarkable achievement came less than two weeks after the tragic death of his mother, Yvette LaFleur, following her battle with cancer.

An Emotional Triumph Amid Personal Loss

Smith struggled to contain his emotions after becoming the hero of the game, as the Braves staged a dramatic ninth-inning comeback from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 30-year-old became the first player in MLB history to hit a walk-off grand slam in his debut with a new team.

A Mother's Battle and a Son's Dedication

After the game, Smith revealed that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in September and nearly died at the start of spring training camp. He left the team for over a week when she experienced a serious health scare but returned because he was fighting for his position on the roster. Tragically, Smith was not with her in California when she passed away on March 15.

'I definitely felt her presence,' Smith said of his mother after hitting the game-winning grand slam. 'I got choked up a bunch of times and I'm trying to hold back tears right now. It's just so special. I feel her every day. I miss her dearly. There's not a moment where I don't think about her.'

Team Support During Difficult Times

Smith, who was one of the last players to make the Braves' opening day roster, expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from the organization during his mother's illness. 'This team is just so awesome,' he said. 'I'm so blessed because of the love they showed me, the support every day. They're asking about her, asking about her well-being, my well-being, and that's all they really cared about. They didn't care about baseball.'

Looking Forward to Healing

The designated hitter now looks forward to a road trip to Anaheim next week, where he will be able to see family and properly say his goodbyes. 'I'm just so thankful because this team knows what I'm going through,' he added. 'They really picked me up the last few weeks.'

Reflecting on his long career playing against the Braves, Smith noted the special significance of this victory: 'I've played against the Braves for a long time, and being on the other side a lot of these endings kind of hurt, so to be on the right side of it this time was so fun.'
