The family and friends of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva gathered for a funeral on Saturday, two days after their deaths in a car crash in Spain. The service took place in the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church near Porto, where Jota had been married just 13 days earlier.
Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, died when their Lamborghini left the A-52 road in northwestern Spain and burst into flames after a suspected tyre blowout. Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, was visibly distraught, weeping as she followed her husband's coffin.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, left-back Andy Robertson, manager Arne Slot, and several teammates attended, bringing wreaths shaped like football shirts with Jota's number 20. Former players Jordan Henderson and James Milner also paid their respects.
Premier League stars including Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, and Renato Veiga were present. Ruben Neves, a close friend and former teammate, acted as a pallbearer after flying in from Florida. Portugal manager Roberto Martinez said, 'We are together and we will always be together, and their spirit will be with us forever.'
The crash occurred after a tyre blowout while overtaking, according to Spain's Civil Guard. Jota was returning to the UK for pre-season training after a minor operation.
