NFL's Dickson: NRL Star Burton Could Transition to NFL Punting with Precision
Dickson: NRL's Burton Could Make NFL Punting Leap with Detail Focus

Australian Super Bowl hero Michael Dickson has expressed confidence that NRL star Matt Burton could successfully transition into the high-stakes world of NFL punting, provided he demonstrates an immense focus on precision and detail. Burton, a Canterbury Bulldogs five-eighth known for his powerful kicks, has drawn comparisons to NFL punts for years, recently showcasing his ability by blasting a ball over 60 metres during pre-season training.

Burton's NFL Aspirations and Training Opportunity

The 25-year-old Burton has openly admitted his interest in a potential code switch and seized the opportunity to train at the Las Vegas Raiders' facilities this week. This training session occurred as the Bulldogs prepared for their NRL season opener at Allegiant Stadium, highlighting the growing crossover between Australian rugby league and American football.

Dickson's Unique Perspective on Athletic Transitions

Sydney-born Dickson, who follows AFL more closely than NRL due to his background in the Sydney Swans academy, has no doubt that an athlete of Burton's calibre could make the leap to the NFL if desired. 'I'm sure he could do it,' stated the Seattle Seahawks punter, who recently became a Super Bowl champion. 'It's quite different to Aussie Rules and league, the sweet spot on the ball is completely different. He would eventually find the sweet spot kicking an NFL ball.'

The Rigorous Path to NFL Success

Dickson's own journey to the NFL involved training with Prokick Australia in Melbourne, attending the University of Texas, and being drafted by the Seahawks in 2018. Now 30, he has risen to become the NFL's highest-paid punter and only the second Australian to play on a winning Super Bowl team, following Seattle's victory over New England earlier this month.

This fame and fortune, however, are built on a foundation of meticulous hard work. Dickson quickly realised that NFL punters face different challenges compared to Australian sports, where athletes might have more opportunities to redeem a poor play. 'In league, you can hit a bad ball and be like, 'That's it, I want to make this tackle, I want to do something here to make amends,'' he explained. 'In the NFL, you might only get three or four punts a game. And if one or two of them aren't perfect, you can still hit a decent ball but it's not perfect, then 50 per cent of your game wasn't up to standard.'

The Extreme Discipline Required in Punting

Dickson emphasized that consistency is key in the NFL, where punters must deliver near-perfect performances across numerous attempts. 'It's very easy to hit one good punt,' he noted. 'But it's really quite difficult to have a year where out of 70 punts, 65 of them are really good punts. That's a very hard thing to do, so I give it the attention and the effort that it deserves.'

To master his craft, Dickson has maintained detailed journals since 2020, documenting and analysing almost 1000 punts from both games and training sessions. Off the field, he immerses himself in reading materials on stoicism, performance psychology, and discipline, citing authors like Ryan Holiday and Michael Gervais as favourites. He even received a Kindle for Christmas to enhance his reading during the off-season.

'I try to leave no stone unturned,' Dickson asserted. 'It's about extreme discipline in the detail.'

Additional Factors for NFL Success

Beyond hard work and attention to detail, Dickson highlighted that Burton would need to meet physical standards and possess unwavering self-belief to thrive in the NFL. 'You've got to have a big leg, and you have to be somewhat delusional,' he remarked. 'A lot of the time, you're going out there when the game's not going well, the offence wasn't doing their thing. You need to go out there and think, I'm about to flip this game.'

This insight underscores the mental and physical demands of NFL punting, suggesting that while Burton's raw talent is evident, a successful transition would require a comprehensive approach focused on precision, resilience, and confidence.
