Racing icon Frankie Dettori delivered an emotional farewell at this year's Shergar Cup, describing his decades-long career as "an incredible journey" during his final appearance at the prestigious event.
The 52-year-old Italian jockey, who has become a household name in British racing, fought back tears as he reflected on his extraordinary career at Ascot. "It's been an amazing ride," Dettori told the Mirror. "I've been coming to the Shergar Cup for 25 years - it's always been one of my favourite meetings."
A Career Defined by Greatness
Dettori's appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup marked his 25th and final participation in the unique team competition. The racing legend has been synonymous with the event since its inception in 1999, having only missed two editions throughout his illustrious career.
"I've had so many great memories here," Dettori continued. "From winning the first Shergar Cup to all the fantastic atmospheres over the years. It's been an honour to be part of it for so long."
Team Europe's Strong Showing
Dettori captained Team Europe to a respectable second-place finish in this year's competition, with the Ladies team ultimately claiming victory. The legendary jockey showed he's still got what it takes, delivering impressive performances throughout the day.
"Frankie's presence always elevates the event," said Shergar Cup organizer Nick Smith. "He brings that star quality that few in racing can match. Today was about celebrating his incredible contribution to the sport."
What's Next for the Racing Legend?
While Dettori has announced his intention to retire from British racing, fans haven't seen the last of the charismatic jockey. He confirmed plans to continue competing in America before hanging up his boots for good later this year.
"I'm not done yet," Dettori said with a trademark smile. "But today was special. The British fans have been amazing to me throughout my career, and I'll never forget their support."
As the sun set on Ascot, one of racing's greatest showmen took his final Shergar Cup bow, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations of jockeys to come.
