Cyriel Dessers has given his strongest indication yet that he will remain at Rangers this summer, despite reported interest from Greek side AEK Athens. The 30-year-old Nigerian striker, who appeared close to leaving Ibrox earlier in the transfer window, was seen interacting with fans after Rangers' 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League third qualifying round.
In a video posted on TikTok, a supporter directly asked Dessers whether he was staying or going. The forward laughed and replied: 'Eh, looks like I'm staying, huh? I'm here today, huh?' The fan responded enthusiastically: 'Honestly? You're staying? Oh, top man. Over the moon.'
Dessers had reportedly agreed a £30,000-a-week deal with AEK Athens, but Rangers' new American owners have refused to accept less than £5 million for the striker. Russell Martin, the Rangers manager, confirmed after last weekend's draw at Motherwell that Dessers was the only player for whom the club had received offers.
Despite the uncertainty, Dessers started the midweek match against Viktoria Plzen and made an immediate impact, scoring a penalty and providing an assist. The former Cremonese forward has contributed 52 goals and 17 assists in 113 appearances since joining Rangers for £4.5 million in 2023.
Dessers was happy to mingle with fans after the match, posing for pictures and signing autographs outside Ibrox. Up to ten clubs had been chasing his signature in January, but he stayed to finish the season in Glasgow, falling just one goal short of 30 for the campaign.
